Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I sell my car or van to Sell The Car?
We offer a competitive price based on current market value, pay without fees, charges, or haggling, and collect your vehicle for free from anywhere in the UK. If you've had a better offer elsewhere, let us know — we'll try to beat it.
How will I be paid for my vehicle?
By bank transfer, direct into your account. Payment is arranged once you've accepted our offer and before the car is collected — there's no charge for this and no need to wait until after collection to receive your money.
What documents do I need to sell my car?
Just your V5C registration certificate (logbook). You don't need a service history, MOT certificate, or proof of any repair work to sell your car to us.
I've lost my V5C/logbook — what do I do?
You can get a replacement by completing a V62 form, available to download from gov.uk or available at most Post Office branches. A replacement V5C typically takes around 4 weeks to arrive, so it's worth applying as early as possible if you know you want to sell.
Can I sell a car with outstanding finance on it?
Yes. If you still owe finance on the vehicle, we'll contact the finance company directly, settle the outstanding balance, and pay you the difference between the sale price and what's owed.
What if my outstanding finance is more than the car is worth?
We can still help. We'll settle the finance on your behalf, but in this case you'll need to pay us the shortfall between the settlement figure and the sale price. We accept most major debit cards and bank transfer for this.
Are there any cars or vans you won't buy?
We buy cars and vans in any condition, regardless of mileage, age, or whether they run. This includes non-runners, cars with engine or gearbox failure, MOT failures, electrical faults, and accident, fire, or flood damage.
Can I sell a car that doesn't start or drive?
Yes. There's no requirement for a car to be running, taxed, or have a valid MOT in order to sell it — those rules apply to driving on public roads, not to selling. We collect non-running vehicles using appropriate recovery transport, so you don't need to get the car moving yourself.
My registration number isn't returning a result — what does that mean?
This can happen for a few reasons and doesn't mean we won't buy your car. Email us at info@sellthecar.co.uk with your registration and a brief description of the vehicle, and we'll get back to you directly with a quote.
Do you charge any fees?
No. There are no charges or fees at any stage of the process. The price we offer is the price you're paid.
Why choose Sell The Car over another buyer?
We've been buying damaged, faulty, and non-running cars since 2009, and we're rated 4.9 out of 5 on Trustpilot from over 2,500 reviews. Rather than take our word for it, you can read independent reviews from customers who've already sold to us, covering pricing, payment speed, and collection experience.
